modify/modification – Misused Words

amend, change.

Explanation
When referring to changes to legislation, “amend/amendment” are better words than “modify/modification.” In other contexts, the word “change” is a more common alternative.

Example
Avoid “The Commission … undertook to make proposals to modify the regulation before issuing the next annual report, which is to be drawn up in mid-2009.”

Use “The Commission … undertook to make proposals to amend the regulation before issuing the next annual report, which is to be drawn up in mid-2009.”
