Text messaging, or texting, is the act of typing and sending a brief, electronic message between two or more mobile phones or fixed or portable devices over a phone network. The term originally referred to messages sent using the Short Message Service (SMS); it has grown to include messages containing image, video, and sound content (known as MMS messages. The sender of a text message is known as a texter, while the service itself has different colloquialisms depending on the region.

Texting has evolved into a multi billion dollar industry. It is probably the most favorite CRM tool for retail industry. Having a chatbot embedded on a website is also very common. These chatbots have preset rules and give automated responses to visitor’s text messages.

AI powered chatbots can direct text messages to a certain agent, email or phone number.

Multilingual texting is also possible thanks to the new neural machine translation engines. In a very near future, well defined processes like booking, checking-in, checking-out, ordering products and services, taking a taxi cab will all be enabled by AI powered texting and text to speech, speech to text or speech to speech servives.

Future graduates of translation studies may lead this transformation as personalized language robot creators and trainers.
